What is sophia smith?

Sophia Smith (August 27, 1796 – June 12, 1870) was the founder of Smith%20College, a women's liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts. Born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, she inherited a substantial fortune from her brother, Austin Smith. For much of her life, Smith suffered from hearing loss, which increased with age, eventually leading to deafness. She began considering ways to use her inherited wealth for the benefit of others, ultimately deciding to dedicate it to the cause of women's%20education. Her will stipulated the establishment of a college for women that would provide a rigorous and comprehensive education equivalent to that offered at the best men's colleges of the time. She believed that by providing women with access to higher education, they could become more self-sufficient and contribute more fully to society.
